Polio is an RNA virus that attacks motor neurons. It especially likes gray matter of the anterior spinal cord (the part with motor neurons). Hence the name "polio" meaning gray and "myelitis" which is an inflammation of the spinal cord. So it basically means it's an inflammation of the gray matter of the spinal cord. It's a complicated sounding name with a very simple meaning.
There are 3 types of poliovirus, A, B, and C.
